Two of Columbus' best chefs will push culinary boundaries on April 28 in the local premiere of Chef Showdown 2006. Chef Brian Hinshaw of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants and Chef Phil Yandolino of Bravo Development, Inc. Restaurants will prepare dishes from scratch in a fully equipped kitchen provided by The Wasserstrom Company exclusively for the event at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, 405 Neil Avenue in the Arena District. When the smoke clears a star panel of judges, led by honorary judge Chef Hartmut Handke, Certified Master Chef, will determine the gastronomic champ.

The culinary caper begins at 6:30 p.m. with an epicurean dinner hour for more than 500 catered by Bravo Development, Inc. Restaurants and Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. A live auction offers guests the opportunity to bid on the unique experience of being on stage as chef assistants in the evening's competition or on the sidelines as a judge. Other auction items include private dinner parties at Lindey's and M, a lifetime membership to Aubergine, cookware, travel and artwork.

Similar to an Iron Chef competition, Yandolino and Hinshaw will have 60 minutes to cook at their battle stations. At the last moment, the Secret Ingredient Sponsor will spice up the challenge and provide a secret ingredient to incorporate into the recipes.

Expert commentary will be provided by Chef Hubert Seifert of Spagio and Farmer Lee Jones of The Culinary Vegetable Institute in Huron, Ohio. In addition to Handke, the panel of judges who will determine the winning chef includes Jon Christensen, restaurant and wine reviewer, The Columbus Dispatch; Michael Taylor, an award-winning amateur chef and co-founder of City Barbeque; Jeni Britton of Jeni's Ice Cream and Nannette Maciejunes, executive director of the Columbus Museum of Art.

Singer/harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, bassist Bobby Sheehan and drummer Brendan Hill formed the rock quartet Blues Traveler in 1988. Blues Traveler released its self-titled debut album in May 1990 and followed with Travelers & Thieves in September 1991. In April 1993, Blues Traveler released its third album, Save His Soul, which became its first to make the Top 100. Blues Traveler's aptly named fourth album, Four, released in September 1994, at first looked like a sales disappointment, but it rebounded in 1995 when single Run-Around became the group's first chart hit. Run-Around became one of the biggest singles of 1995, spending nearly a full year on the charts and sending Four into quintuple platinum status. As the group prepared the follow-up to Four, Blues Traveler released the live double-album Live From the Fall in the summer of 1996. The group returned in the summer of 1997 with its fifth studio album, Straight on Till Morning. Tragedy struck on August 20, 1999 when bassist Sheehan was found dead in his New Orleans home. The new millennium saw a newly charged Blues Traveler, and the sixth record, Bridge, appeared in May 2001. The next winter, Blues Traveler released the live album What You and I Have Been Through. Studio record Truth Be Told followed in 2003, and another concert album, Live on the Rocks, appeared in 2004.

The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum will celebrate eight decades of BMW sport bikes with a celebration of the Bavarian marque's sporting heritage. The exhibit features seldom seen and historically significant machines from nearly every decade of the company's 80 years of motorcycle production, from a 1927 overhead-valve R47 twin to the recently introduced K1200R in-line four sport bike. Also featured is a valuable, never-before-shown collection of trophies and cups on loan from BMW's own archives in Munich, Germany, as well as memorabilia and historic images from BMW's Mobile Tradition division. Visitors will enjoy some exceptional early and rare BMW designs. Particularly significant is the oldest motorcycle on display, a 1927 BMW R47, one of 1,720 machines sold between 1927-1928. As early as 1921, BMW was producing power plants like the two cylinder 494cc flat twin in the R47, which launched the bike to a then-sizzling top speed of nearly 70 mph. Motorcycles from nearly every decade of the company's history are on view, including the R5, the road-going twin cam sport model based on BMW's consistent race winner, the R5SS (Super Sport). BMW offered a sport motorcycle in each of its eight decades and it is this sporting heritage that enabled them to accomplish their "Mastery of Speed."

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is a walkathon, held in more than 200 locations throughout the year, benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. More than 500,000 men, women, and children – including those from 5,000 large corporations and local companies, and 3,500 family teams – will participate this year. The Walk raised more than $74 million last year for diabetes research. This year, their goal is to raise $80 million. The JDRF Mid-Ohio Chapter will hold their walk at Easton Town Center on Sunday, October 2 with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m. on the Town Square.

Worthington first suburb to offer wireless zone

Computer-users may now browse the internet or check their e-mail while seated on a bench on the Village Green or at a table on the downtown sidewalk.

The city of Worthington and Harborlink Network LLC, of Dayton, last Friday introduced a Wi-Fi (for wireless fidelity) network which provides internet access along High Street from South Street to Stafford Avenue.

The "hot spot" will be extended to North Street when another transmitter becomes available. The transmitter that was to be installed on the north end of the wireless area is being used in New Orleans to assist in recovery efforts.

The area covered extends for two blocks on each side of High Street. It is meant for outdoor use only, but some people may be able to pick up the signal indoors, said Worthington spokesperson Anne Brown.

Worthington is the first suburb in Ohio to offer a wireless internet zone, said assistant city manager Paul Feldman.

Since word spread that the system was being set up here, other central Ohio communities have contacted him to find out how to sign up for their own systems.

"We were pioneers in 1803, and we are pioneers now with this new technology," he said.

He connected with Harborlink representatives after he heard a presentation on a hot spot it had started last April in a one-square-mile area of Dayton.

Worthington City Council heard the proposal and agreed that, with little cost to the city, there was no reason to not sign up.

Cost to the city is approximately $50 a month to pay for the main line, which enters the city at the Griswold Center.

Shoe-box size boxes which relay signals are attached to traffic signal mast arms at South Village Green Drive and South Street. The power they use is similar to that used by a light bulb, Feldman said.

"Whether this is sustainable long-term, who knows," he said. "Worthington is not at risk, so why not do it?"

Users need a laptop computer, pocket personal computer, or personal digital assistant with a wireless networking card to use the network.

To connect, choose "harborlink" on the computer screen. A greeting page will appear and will pop up on the screen every 12 minutes.

That page now has the city logo, local links, and information such as weather. Eventually, it may have sponsors and advertisers, which will pay for the system.
